Rise East is a 10-year collective effort to make deep and lasting improvements in the health and well-being of Black children and families in East Oakland. When we rise, we create a tide that can uplift the entire city.
The once and future Oakland
This is a city rich with legacy.
This is a city rich with potential.
This is a city that is ready.
Between 1990-2020, Oakland lost nearly half of its Black population as economic and social forces created an unsustainable situation for families. And perhaps no area in our city has borne the brunt of decades of hardship like East Oakland. Once a middle-class community at the heart of the city, East Oakland is currently home to the majority of the city’s Black families living in poverty.
RiseEast embodies the belief that by prioritizing the well-being and success of Black children and families, we can create a ripple effect that uplifts and empowers all members of our city. Our initiatives are direct reflections of the hopes and needs of the people who live here.
EMPOWERING THE 40X40
$100 million invested into our community over the next five years. That’s the goal.
We’re already halfway there. Oakland is one of a few communities selected by Blue Meridian Partners to potentially receive $50 million in philanthropic capital, unlocked by local giving. We are now securing an equal-sized investment from local foundations, businesses, and donors who recognize that this is an unparalleled opportunity to build and rebuild the Oakland our communities deserve.
